The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall inhabit Llwynywermod for first time

23rd June 2008

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will stay at Llwynywermod for the first time during a series of engagements in Wales this week. The property was purchased by The Duchy of Cornwall in March 2007 as The Prince has for sometime wished to have a base in Wales.

The three bedroom farm house will be used by Their Royal Highnesses during their annual summer visit to Wales. The property includes a barn which has been converted into a conference unit, to be used by The Prince’s Charities. The unit includes a large dining room, lounge and a three bedroom residential unit. There is also an extra dwelling for ancillary accommodation on the West Range of the property. Occasionally, when the property is not in use by Their Royal Highnesses, or The Prince’s Charities, the barn and the ancillary accommodation will be used as holiday lets.

Over the past year The Duchy of Cornwall has been working closely with local craftsmen and contractors to renovate the house. These include Ty-Mawr Lime from Brecon who have provided the lime plaster, Coe Stone Ltd stonemasons from Neath and Camillieri, roofing contractors from the Vale of Glamorgan. Materials have been sourced from within Wales wherever possible. Some of the stone used has been recovered from existing stone on the site. Likewise, some of the Welsh slate used for the roof has been salvaged from the site.

The interior will be furnished with local Welsh textiles (including Welsh shirting flannel to line the curtains), blankets and quilts and early 20th Century Welsh pottery. Rugs from Solva Woollen Mill, which Their Royal Highnesses will visit on Wednesday, have also been used. An early Welsh Dresser which was given to The Queen on Her Majesty’s wedding day by the people of Meirionnydd is being used in the farm house. In the North Range there is an 18th Century Carmarthenshire dresser that includes Ewenny pottery.

The Prince and The Duchess will host a drinks reception at Llwynywermod on the evening of Wednesday 25th June to meet local residents and the craftsmen who have contributed to the property.
