The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will inaugurate a new memorial garden in New York for the British victims of the September 11th attacks on the first day of their official visit to the United States of America next month.
Their Royal Highnesses will first visit the World Trade Centre site, before dedicating the new British Memorial Garden in lower Manhattan by unveiling its centre stone.
During their visit to the US from 1st to the 8th November The Prince and The Duchess will also travel to Washington DC and San Francisco. The official tour recognises the importance of the relationship between the two countries and their common bonds and shared traditions. It supports key British Government objectives in diplomacy, commerce, the environment and dialogue between faiths as well as commemorating shared sacrifices in war and peace time.
While in New York The Prince of Wales will attend a Youth Enterprise event at the United Nations with Secretary General Kofi Annan. Their Royal Highnesses will also attend a reception at the Museum of Modern Art to meet a cross-section of Americans involved in the arts, business, politics and the media.
In Washington DC Their Royal Highnesses will have lunch and dinner at the White House with President and Mrs Bush. Accompanied by Mrs Bush they will visit a school. They will lay a wreath at a new memorial to honour those who lost their lives in the Second World War and visit the Folger Shakespeare Library.
The Duchess of Cornwall, who is President of the National Osteoporosis Society in the UK, and The Prince of Wales, will meet patients and attend a seminar at the National Institutes of Health to discuss public education for better bone health. The National Osteoporosis Foundation in the US and other stakeholders will also attend to increase osteoporosis awareness.
While in Washington, The Prince of Wales will receive the Vincent Scully Prize for contribution to the public understanding of architecture and community planning.
In San Francisco The Prince of Wales will give a speech on the environment to business leaders and American environmental organisations. Their Royal Highnesses will also visit a farmers’ market north of the city showcasing local sourcing and high quality organic produce and the “Edible School Yard” at a local school designed to encourage healthier eating. The Prince and The Duchess will meet members of the San Francisco and Silicon Valley business community at a dinner.
